David Blatt has reached an agreement in principal to be the next coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers, a league source with knowledge of the negotiations confirmed. A source involved in contract negotiations insisted the deal isn’t yet completed, but a third source with knowledge of the negotiations indicated Thursday night once the deal is completed, it will be worth about $20 million.
Blatt, 55, is an out-of-the-box hire. He played at Princeton, but has spent his entire professional career playing and coaching overseas. He guided Maccabi Tel Aviv to the Israeli League championship and the Euroleague championship this season and coached the Russians to a bronze medal at the 2012 London Olympics.
Blatt confirmed the deal to European basketball reporter David Pick.
“It’s done,” Blatt told Pick. “Couldn’t be more excited. Can’t wait for challenge.”
