Cavs assign Leuer to NBA D-League

MINNEAPOLIS: The Cavaliers assigned Jon Leuer to the Canton Charge of the NBA Development League on Friday after he appeared in only five of the Cavs' first 19 games.

Leuer, claimed off waivers over the summer, was averaging 3.2 points and 2.0 rebounds. He will be available when the Charge play at Springfield on Saturday.

"Just sent him down to get some playing time," Cavs coach Byron Scott said. "We think this would be the best thing for him right now. He needs to get on the floor and play."

Leuer hasn't appeared in a game since Nov. 27 against Phoenix, when he played three minutes, so the move doesn't exactly create minutes for rookie Kevin Jones.

Scott maintains whether or not he will play Jones depends on game situations. He wants him to get at least another practice in before he turns him loose with substantial minutes, but the Cavaliers won't practice again until Monday.

"I still want him to get a little more acclimated to what we're doing," Scott said. "We've still got some time. I was impressed with the way he handled his first practice. We'll see how the next one goes."
