"Yeah, it was a mistake," Gilbert said Wednesday at Brown's reintroductory news conference. "When you get the benefit of hindsight, it was a mistake. We're very happy that we get to rectify any position we took back then by Mike being available right now."

Brown, Mike shouting

Random thoughts this morning while waiting for Mike Brown’s afternoon press conference…

* The Cavs front office isn't going to spend a lot of time today dwelling on three years ago, but Dan Gilbert will inevitably be asked about the decision to fire Brown and now bring him back. And Gilbert, in so many words, is expected to admit firing Brown three years ago was a mistake. A series of decisions culiminated in the Cavs feeling forced to fire Brown to appease LeBron James. It didn't work out so well.

Stan Van Gundy is not interested in the Cavaliers, according to a report in today's Orlando Sentinel.

Van Gundy has 371 career victories, a .641 career winning percentage and has never had a losing season in eight years as a coach. He is high on the Cavs' list of replacements for Byron Scott, but that may not matter anymore.

Focus turns to Byron Scott's future after Cavs lose to Bobcats, finish season losing 16 of 18

Byron sitting dejected

CHARLOTTE, N.C. On the final frustrating night of a long, frustrating season, the easiest word for both Kyrie Irving and Byron Scott to locate was frustrating.

Irving used it five times in less than four minutes prior to the game while describing this season. Scott used “frustrated” to summarize both this season and his three years in Cleveland – then he grew visibly frustrated with reporters for the first time all season when an out-of-town media member repeated the identical question for Scott to answer a second time.

Cavs fall to Heat at buzzer, Irving skips ceremony and Scott expects to return next season as coach

Irving dribbles vs Heat

CLEVELAND: The most riveting part of the night should have been the game’s final play, when Kyrie Irving backed down Norris Cole in the final seconds and was stripped in what became a 96-95 Miami Heat victory.

But Irving’s peculiar behavior after the game quickly became just as interesting as another loss in a season filled with them. While the rest of the players lined up to hand selected fans their jerseys and shoes as part of Fan Appreciation Night, Irving immediately sprinted off the court at the buzzer and into the locker room. Irving’s quick exit left a staff member to scramble back to the locker room and gather a jersey and pair of Irving’s shoes to be handed out by someone else.

Cavs fall to the Heat 96-95 in last home game of the season

By Ryan Lewis Published: April 15, 2013

Kyrie Irving and the Cavaliers had a chance at the end but ultimately fell to the Heat 96-95 on Monday night.

Irving had four points in the final minute and had the ball with the Cavs down one and 13.9 seconds on the clock. Irving drove to his left and went up for a shot just past the free-throw line but had it swiped away by Norris Cole as he was going up.

Irving scores career-low, Cavs effort ripped in loss to Sixers

PHILADELPHIA: Kyrie Irving walked to the bench with 10:31 left in the third quarter Sunday with five fouls, four points and four turnovers to his name. He never returned. There simply wasn’t a need on a day the Cavaliers never made it to Wells Fargo Center.

In a season full of disappointing efforts, the Cavs squeezed in one more with their 91-77 loss to the Philadelphia 76ers. They scored 34 points in the first half and managed just 51 through three quarters. At one point in the third, the Cavs had 18 baskets and 16 turnovers.

CLEVELAND: The tallest player in the New York Knicks’ starting lineup on Friday was 6-foot-8, giving Cavs center Tyler Zeller a good four inches on anyone the Knicks could throw at him.

Yet Zeller took only three shots all night, and the first two were from just inside the 3-point line in the Cavs’ 101-91 loss to the Knicks.

Thompson's untimely foul leads to 111-104 loss to Pistons

Waiters drives vs Pistons

CLEVELAND: There is a little-known rule in the NBA that prevents teams from targeting a terrible free throw shooter in a game’s final minutes. Tristan Thompson insists he knew about the rule prior to the final 20 seconds of Wednesday’s 111-104 loss to the Detroit Pistons, but watching television replays makes that debatable.

Regardless, Thompson will always be cognizant of it now.

Dion Waiters listed as probable for tonight's game against Detroit

By Jason Lloyd Published: April 10, 2013
Waiters dunk hang on rim

Dion Waiters is listed as probable and expected to play tonight when the Cavs host the Detroit Pistons.

Waiters has missed the last 10 games with a loose piece of cartilage in his left knee. He participated in the Cavs’ most recent practice on Monday, but coach Byron Scott downplayed that at the time because he said the workout was so light, he wouldn’t even consider it a real practice. A team spokesman said on Monday that Waiters had not been cleared to return to practice, and Scott’s long-standing rule is players coming off injury must first practice before playing. But the team sent out a release that Waiters is probable for tonight, so apparently Monday’s practice will suffice for Waiters to return to the floor.

INDEPENDENCE: As questions about his future mount, Cavs coach Byron Scott said he can’t evaluate the job he has done yet because he doesn’t have all the pieces. He refuses to publicly defend himself, so Tristan Thompson chose Thursday to do it for him.

ATLANTA: In the 73rd game, with time running out on the season and pressure mounting on coach Byron Scott’s future, the Cavs began to fight.

Tristan Thompson played the second half with three stitches above his left eye and Daniel Gibson was given two technicals and ejected for jawing with an old nemesis. Luke Walton was hit in the face and responded by delivering a two-handed shove to a man who outweighs him by 20 pounds. And in the biggest change of all, Scott walked into the coach’s locker room following Sunday’s loss to the New Orleans Hornets and revamped the team’s defense on the fly.
