INDEPENDENCE: The Cavaliers selected Kansas freshman Andrew Wiggins with the first overall pick in Thursday’s NBA Draft.

Wiggins was expected to go No. 1 overall in this draft as far back as a year ago, but the Cavs were torn between selecting Wiggins or Duke freshman Jabari Parker. The Cavs had Parker ranked higher on their draft board much of the season, but ultimately selected the ultra athletic Wiggins, who set freshman scoring records for the Jayhawks and ended the year averaging 17.1 points and 5.9 rebounds.

Wiggins immediately fills the Cavs’ need at small forward, although they’re still expected to aggressively pursue LeBron James when free agency opens next week. His arrival also gives the Cavs a potent future lineup that also includes Kyrie Irving and Dion Waiters.

The Cavs now have five players (Wiggins, Irving, Waiters, Tristan Thompson and Anthony Bennett) who were top-four picks over the last four years. Wiggins, Thompson and Bennett also gives the Cavs a trio of young Canadians.
