Cavs 97, Bulls 93; Jason Lloyd's final thoughts

By Jason Lloyd Published: November 30, 2013

CLEVELAND: Eleven thoughts from a 97-93 Cavs victory that ends their five-game losing streak…

1. Not to be melodramatic, but if this Andrew Bynum experiment works, tonight will be viewed as the turning point. It was a milestone night for Bynum, who set season highs with 30 minutes, 20 points, 10 rebounds and five blocks.

Bynum and Noah

CLEVELAND: If this experiment with Andrew Bynum is a success, if the Cavs can really make him a pillar of the offense and defense, then Saturday’s 97-93 victory against the Chicago Bulls might be remembered as the turning point.

Bynum played 30 minutes, scored 20 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and blocked five shots – all season highs and on the second night of a back-to-back, no less.

BOSTON: The Cavaliers fell behind by 16 points just 6 ½ minutes into Friday’s game and lost 103-86 to the Boston Celtics in another miserable road performance.

Kyrie Irving had 17 points, Dion Waiters had 21 points and Anderson Varejao had 10 points and 12 rebounds, but the Cavs fell behind 18-2 against another Eastern Conference weakling and never recovered. The Celtics shot 61 percent in the first half and carried a 55-39 lead into the locker room. The deficit swelled to 25 in the third quarter.

CLEVELAND: With t-shirts asking him to return scattered throughout the crowd, LeBron James’ return to Cleveland ended like so many others before it. James had 28 points, eight rebounds and eight assists and the Miami Heat left town with an easy 95-84 victory over the weary Cavaliers, who have lost four straight and seven of their last eight.

Dion Waiters’ turbulent day concluded with a season-high 24 points and six rebounds, but the Cavs struggled offensively after a fast start and rarely pulled within double figures in the fourth quarter.

SAN ANTONIO: The Cavaliers entered the half Saturday night trailing the San Antonio Spurs by more points than they had scored. They needed three quarters to play equal to the Spurs’ remarkable first half.

In a season full of miserable losses, Saturday’s 126-96 pounding by the best team in the league wasn’t necessarily a surprise, but the extent of the mauling left the Cavs dragging home a three-game losing streak with the two-time defending champion Miami Heat up next. Kyrie Irving scored 28 points, including 13 straight in a valiant fourth-quarter comeback, but the Cavaliers fell 98-91 at home Wednesday to the Washington Wizards.
