Irving scores 28, but short-handed Cavs fall to Warriors
OAKLAND, CALIF.: Kyrie Irving had 28 points and seven assists, but the short-handed Cavaliers fell to the Golden State Warriors on Wednesday 106-96.
The Cavs were without Anderson Varejao and Tyler Zeller, leaving them vulnerable in the post. As a result, the Warriors’ David Lee and Carl Landry were difficult matchups most of the night. Lee had 22 points and 14 rebounds, while Landry had 19 points and nine rebounds off the bench.
Varejao was a late scratch with a sore right knee, while Zeller returned to Cleveland to have his fractured cheekbone examined by team doctors. As a result, Samardo Samuels started at forward and Tristan Thompson started at center.
The Cavs fell behind early amid a flurry of first-quarter turnovers. They allowed 37 points in the first quarter and trailed by 16 before slowly chipping away. They briefly took the lead in the third quarter, but the personnel losses were too much to overcome.
Stephen Curry had 21 points and six assists and rookie Harrison Barnes had his highest scoring output of the season with 14 points.
Thompson had 11 points and 10 rebounds, while Samuels had 11 points and seven rebounds for the Cavs. Dion Waiters, after his brilliant 28-point effort on Monday, had just 12 points and five assists on 5 of 15 shooting.
