Joel Embiid has a stress fracture in his right foot and will have surgery on Friday to correct it, casting further doubt on whom the Cavaliers should select with the No. 1 pick in next week’s NBA draft.
Embiid’s fracture is in the navicular bone. Tellem said Embiid will not attend the draft in New York.
Yahoo Sports reported Cavs doctors discovered the fracture during his visit to Cleveland last week. Cavs doctors have a reputation for being incredibly thorough during their predraft examinations, particularly with players who carry past injury issues. This wouldn’t be the first time Cavs doctors discovered an injury on a potential draft pick.
Embiid already carried injury concerns after a stress fracture in his back limited him to 28 games last season at Kansas. Now this injury could eliminate him from consideration for the top overall pick by the Cavs.
