Leon Powe Remembers Playing with LeBron

By George Thomas Published: August 13, 2009

Some might actually be surprised just to know how small of a world it is.  When he was in high school LeBron James and Leon Powe played together on the same AAU and ABCD Camp teams.
Powe said he recruited James to play on his AAU team out of Oakland, Calif., but eventually his team was accused of cheating.

It ain’t cheatin’ if you’re recruiting.  You’re just recruiting real well.
Apparently because of that, the governing body adopted a rule that said you couldn't bring in a player from outside a 100-mile radius.
Powe was also on the ABCD Camp team and played in a game that is widely viewed as putting LeBron on the map nationally.
Their team won to reach the championship game in the camp and faced a team led by Lenny Cooke, a basketball phenom out of Brooklyn, N.Y.
There was hype around Lenny Cooke; there was hype around James, so the duel was set, except for the media chattering in James' ear, there was no problem.
It was a big showdown.  It was supposed to be him and LeBron and me and Paul Davis.  So all the media surrounding LeBron, they’re telling him Lenny Cooke is this and that and all of this. He’s good he’s great and I don’t know how you’re going to stop him. And they said you can’t do nothing with him.
LeBron said we’re just going to see and wait for the game to start and we’ll see then.  Those are the only words he said.
The end result:  James outscored Cooke 24-9 and to top it off, scored the winning points on a three-point shot to win the game.
