Varejao out vs. Bulls, Mo and Boobie questionable

By Jason Lloyd Published: December 31, 2010

Anderson Varejao will not make the flight to Chicago after breaking a bone in his cheek in Wednesday's loss at Charlotte. Varejao was hit in the face by former Cav DeSagana Diop. In addition, guards Mo Williams and Daniel Gibson are both questionable and will be re-evaluated in the morning.

No one seemed to notice or pay much attention to Varejao's injury at the time. In fact, coach Byron Scott had to rewind the tape a few times just to even see the incident. But Varejao's face swelled up on the flight home and he will not make the trip to Chicago. He will also miss Sunday's game against Dallas. Varejao will be fitted with a mask, but it's unknown yet when he can return. Scott laughed when he was asked how much the Cavs will miss Varejao's defensive presence.

Recap: Magic 110, Cavs 95

By Jason Lloyd Published: December 28, 2010

The Cavs haven't given great effort in every game this season, but it can't be questioned in Tuesday's loss. Anderson Varejao and Mo Williams were diving on the floor for loose balls. Varejao was punching himself in the head he was so excited and the Cavs showed more heart, guts and determination than they have since the season opener against Boston.

The Cavs lost this game at the 3-point line, which has cost them probably three or four other victories along the way as well. The Magic hit 3s when they were open and when the Cavs had hands in their faces. It's been stunning to watch all season, because usually teams sooner or later miss open looks. They can't stay hot forever. But this season against the Cavs, they have.

Cavs-Magic In-Game Report

By Jason Lloyd Published: December 28, 2010

End 3Q: Magic 75, Cavs 74
* Mo Williams is putting up good numbers, but my MVP thus far is Anderson Varejao. He stole a jump ball away from the Magic after Dwight Howard won the tip, caught Hedo Turkoglu on a block (which led to an open 3 for Anthony Parker) and sank a reverse layup -- all in the span of about 47 seconds. Well played, sir.

* Varejao still struggles with the language at times and isn't very comfortable talking to the media. It's unfortunate, because he could be the Cavs' version of Josh Cribbs in this town -- the heart and hustle guy everyone loves. They still do, but it could be so much more.

Cavs sign Alonzo Gee

By Jason Lloyd Published: December 28, 2010

The Cavaliers have signed former Wizards and Spurs guard/forward Alonzo Gee to a non-guaranteed contract.

The 23-year-old Gee appeared in 16 games this season (11 for the Wizards, five for the Spurs), averaging 2.1 points in nine minutes a game. He takes the roster spot of Jawad Williams, whom the team released on Monday. Gee was one of a handful of players the Cavs brought in for a workout Monday night and apparently liked enough to take a shot on him.

Jawad Williams released, Samuels to D-League

By Jason Lloyd Published: December 27, 2010

The Cavaliers released forward Jawad Williams today, two weeks before his contract would have been guaranteed for the rest of the season. They also assigned Samardo Samuels to Erie of the NBA Development League.

Williams' release, which was expected, frees up a roster spot for future moves. His deal, worth about $1 million, was not guaranteed as long as he was released before Jan. 10. The Cavs continue to be active in trade talks around the league, but nothing seems imminent at the moment. They continue to dangle their $14.5 million trade exception to try and facilitate deals around the league while seeking draft picks in return.

Recap: Timberwolves 98, Cavaliers 97

By Jason Lloyd Published: December 26, 2010

Antawn Jamison missed a driving layup in the final seconds and didn't get the foul call he was looking for in the Cavs' 98-97 loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves on Sunday.

Beasley hit the game-winner when he drove around Jamison on Minnesota's previous possession for an easy basket. Coming out of a timeout, Jamison went hard at Beasley before throwing up an off-balanced shot. The contact seemed incidental and Jamison didn't get the call despite protesting it, along with Cavs coach Byron Scott.

* Strange shooting night for Minnesota's Kevin Love. He has missed all four of his attempts, and missed on a jump shot so badly he might be hesitant to shoot again the rest of the night. He has four points, all at the line, and 11 rebounds.

* The Cavs did a little better job on Beasley in the quarter, giving him just four looks at the basket in eight minutes on the court.

Gibson out tonight with flu

By Jason Lloyd Published: December 26, 2010

Cavs guard Daniel Gibson will not play tonight against the Minnesota Timberwolves because of flu-like symptoms. Gibson was sent home from practice Saturday afternoon and is not at the arena tonight.

Jamario Moon will start in his place. Moon is at small forward, as always, with Anthony Parker sliding back to shooting guard. Cavs coach Byron Scott chose Moon because of his length and athleticism in defending the Timberwolves' Michael Beasley.

Recap: Hawks 98, Cavs 84

By Jason Lloyd Published: December 22, 2010

Byron Scott just got done finishing off his Christmas wish list before Wednesday's game: a dominant post-up player or a dominant scorer on the perimeter. One of the two, he said, is what this Cavs team is missing the most.

Then the Cavs went out and got beat by another dominant perimeter player Wednesday night in Atlanta's Joe Johnson.

Cavs-Hawks In-Game Report

By Jason Lloyd Published: December 22, 2010

* Byron Scott hasn't gone this deep into his bench in weeks. He's already played 10 of the 12 actives. The only two not to make it in the game yet are Manny Harris and Leon Powe.

* Cavs have showed tremendous hustle on the glass, grabbing key rebounds and tips to keep plays alive while outrebounding the Hawks 22-20. All while giving up big inches at nearly every position on the floor.

Tuesday practice notes

By Jason Lloyd Published: December 21, 2010

The Cavs went through a light workout Tuesday, with the starters getting some shots up before taking the day off. Cavs coach Byron Scott continues to go easy on them in practice because he's working them so hard in games.

J.J. Hickson is one of those who needs to work hard in practice to regain the trust of his coach. Scott is a firm believer in good -- or bad -- habits beginning in practice and carrying over into games. He was encouraged by Hickson's nine-rebound performance on Monday, but has been fooled by one or two good showings by Hickson in the past, only to have him revert to his old ways.

Cavs-Pacers In-Game Report

By Jason Lloyd Published: December 17, 2010

* The Cavs did a much better job in the third quarter of attacking the middle of the Pacers defense and getting inside. Mo Williams started it with dribble penetration and J.J. Hickson had some clear paths to the basket.

* That said, the Cavs have given up consecutive quarters of 30-plus points again. That first quarter defensive effort was short lived.

Recap: Heat 101, Cavs 95

By Jason Lloyd Published: December 16, 2010

Of everything that happened tonight in the Cavs' second loss of the season to LeBron James, this is what stood out to me: Boobie Gibson talking about opponents "feeling" them.

That was a favorite phrase of Mike Brown over the years. When the Cavs started getting soft defensively, he said teams didn't "feel us." It was startling to hear Gibson use the same phrase, particularly since Byron Scott didn't deny before the game that the Cavs seem to be reverting back to their old defensive ways under Brown.

LeBron ready for more trash talking

By Jason Lloyd Published: December 14, 2010

MIAMI: LeBron James apparently didn't say all he wanted to the first time. As James prepares for Wednesday's rematch against his old team, James said he expects to talk just as much as he did the first time.

Much was made about how much time James spent jawing with former teammates two weeks ago in the Cavs' 118-90 loss to the Heat in Cleveland. With James preparing to welcome his former teammates to his new castle, he made clear on Tuesday that there wasn't any joking going on between he and the Cavs players.

Recap: Rockets 110, Cavs 95

By Jason Lloyd Published: December 11, 2010

Sometimes it's difficult to find even the slightest sign of progress during the Cavaliers' season. This is one of those nights.

-- Byron Scott wanted the Cavs to drive the Rockets off the 3-point line. Instead, they sank 9 of 14 3-pointers in the first half. The players either aren't understanding what Scott wants done or they aren't executing it. Scott wants the players running at the shooters to push them off the line. They aren't doing it, and for those who are, it's happening too late.

Cavs-Rockets In-Game Recap

By Jason Lloyd Published: December 11, 2010

Halftime: Rockets 66, Cavs 58
* Nothing against Boobie Gibson, but when Byron Scott said during the preseason that he was the team's best perimeter defender, a lot of us raised eyebrows. This is why. The Cavs' perimeter defense has been horrendous all season and isn't getting any better, regardless of what changes Scott makes to the starting lineup.

* The only reason the Cavs are still in this game is because they've managed to find a team as inept defensively as they are. The Rockets are shooting a higher percentage, making more 3s and outrebounding the Cavs. But the Cavs are still in this game, but they won't win it unless they find a way to defend the 3-point line.
