Monday post-practice notes

By Jason Lloyd Published: October 4, 2010

* J.J. Hickson has worked solely at forward throughout the first week of camp. I guess it's safe to assume, then, that his experiment as a center is over -- at least for now.

* Byron Scott wouldn't say who he is starting in tomorrow's preseason opener against Charlotte because he doesn't know yet. Hickson would seem the only lock at this point.

* Anderson Varejao remains in Brazil following the death of his grandfather and the team is in no rush for him to come back. Scott said he lost a close family member and he needs to be healthy, mentally and physically, before returning. The physical part is important. The time off will only help his injured ankle, which he admitted last week before leaving the country it still wasn't 100 percent.

* Scott and the players seem to be in agreement that a light went on over the weekend in terms of grasping the offense. Scott wasn't very happy with the performance at Friday's Wine & Gold scrimmage, but has been slightly more upbeat with every day that followed. He took out some of the players' freedom, assigned them places to be on the court and it seems to have helped the process.
