Scott: Waiters has to earn starting job
CLEVELAND: Dion Waiters won't start Monday night's preseason opener at shooting guard. C.J. Miles will.
Scott insists it isn't an indictment on Waiters and that fans shouldn't read anything into it, he's simply making the rookie earn the job.
"It's not a knock on Dion," Scott said. "I think the kid has made some great strides, especially on the defensive end."
Waiters had a poor summer league and conceded after Saturday's Wine and Gold scrimmage he still gets confused on offense. It's part of the reason he asks so many questions, which Scott loves.
Waiters will start at least three preseason games so the coaches can see how he plays with the starters, but Scott said he won't be disappointed if Waiters doesn't grab the starting job by the start of the regular season.
"Don't read into it, we still have three weeks before the start of the season," Scott said. "If he doesn't start the first 10-15 games of the season, I wouldn't be surprised."
