Kyrie Irving and Iman Shumpert return to Cavs practice, although neither cleared for full return

By Jason Lloyd Published: November 30, 2015

INDEPENDENCE: Kyrie Irving and Iman Shumpert returned to practice Monday, although the Cavs said they have not yet been cleared for full basketball activities. They did, however, take part in contact portions of practice. Both players remain without a timeline to return.

“We had a moderated practice that we were able to get them to take part in a good piece of it,” coach David Blatt said. “Day to day, making a little bit more progress.”

Both Irving and Shumpert went hard enough in practice to work up a good sweat. Shumpert is able to shoot with his surgically-repaired right wrist and Blatt conceded he is ahead of schedule.

Cavs 90, Nets 88; Jason Lloyd's 19 thoughts on J.R.'s defense, LeBron's game winner and 6 packs

By Jason Lloyd Published: November 29, 2015

CLEVELAND: Nineteen thoughts for 19 fouls committed in a hard-fought 90-88 win over the Brooklyn Nets on Saturday…

1. David Blatt has been promoting J.R. Smith as a two-way player since shortly after Smith arrived here in a January trade from the Knicks. Smith strung together one of his finest defensive performances of the season Saturday, so Blatt stuck with him in the game’s most crucial moments.

2. Smith nearly made him regret that decision. But LeBron James is strong enough to wash away the most egregious of basketball sins.

LeBron James' floater with 1 second left gives Cavs 90-88 win over Nets

By Jason Lloyd Published: November 28, 2015

CLEVELAND – LeBron James’ runner in the lane with one second left allowed the Cleveland Cavaliers to hold on for a 90-88 win over the Brooklyn Nets.

James and Kevin Love each scored 26 points and the Cavs remained unbeaten at home (9-0), but it didn’t come easy against a struggling Nets team.

Jarrett Jack’s desperation heave at the buzzer from well beyond half court hit the back of the rim. Brook Lopez scored 22 points and grabbed nine rebounds and Joe Johnson had 17 points for the Nets, who have lost four of their last five.

Cavs 95, Hornets 90; Jason Lloyd's 33 thoughts on barbecue chicken, dabbing, Jordan and missing Love

By Jason Lloyd Published: November 28, 2015

CHARLOTTE, N.C.: Thirty-three thoughts for 33 minutes from Matthew Dellavedova in a 95-90 win over the Charlotte Hornets on Friday…

1. Kevin Love had a double-double by halftime. He scored 18 points and grabbed 16 rebounds through three quarters. Yet apparently he approached David Blatt at some point during the fourth quarter and said he was ready if needed, but to keep rolling with the unit on the floor as long as it was working. As a result, Love watched 11 minutes, 58 seconds of the fourth while the Hornets made six baskets and shot 26 percent in the quarter.

2. These items are very much related.

Cavs rally to beat Hornets, extend LeBron James' winning streak against them to 21

By Jason Lloyd Published: November 27, 2015

CHARLOTTE, N.C.: Michael Jordan has more rings. He has more Most Valuable Player trophies. But he’s never been able to beat LeBron James. Sort of.

James had 25 points, 13 rebounds and five assists  Friday, Kevin Love added 18 points and 16 rebounds and the Cavaliers rallied in the fourth quarter to beat the Charlotte Hornets 95-90. The victory makes James 21-0 against this franchise since Jordan bought the team in 2010 and ended the Hornets’ four-game winning streak.

James spent the last few days in a foul mood. He didn’t like the intensity or physicality of Wednesday’s loss at the Toronto Raptors, then was away from his family on Thanksgiving and watched his beloved Dallas Cowboys get dismantled by the Carolina Panthers.

Timofey Mozgov upgraded to questionable for Hornets, Matthew Dellavedova also a possibility

By Jason Lloyd Published: November 27, 2015

CHARLOTTE, N.C.: Timofey Mozgov seems to be ahead of schedule and is questionable for Friday’s game against the Charlotte Hornets. Mozgov has missed the last week after he was originally expected to be sidelined 10-14 days with a strained shoulder. He was dressed and on the court for the team’s morning shootaround Friday.

“We’re going to see how he’s feeling this morning,” coach David Blatt said. “See if we can get him out there a little bit.”

Mozgov has missed the last three games with the shoulder injury, although his right knee has been bothering him since training camp. Although Blatt conceded Mozgov still wasn’t in the right condition prior to the shoulder injury, he was hopeful the time off could help his knee.

Raptors 103, Cavs 99; Jason Lloyd's 36 thoughts on defense, toughness and problems on the road

By Jason Lloyd Published: November 26, 2015

TORONTO: Thirty-six thoughts for 36 baskets in a 103-99 loss to the Toronto Raptors on Drake night at Air Canada Centre Wednesday…

1. Maybe they were tired. Maybe the injuries caught up with them. Maybe it was the bigs. Maybe it was poor rotations defensively. Maybe the East is legitimately improved. All of that was thrown around as possible reasons for this loss, but LeBron James was having none of it.

2. “It’s not an excuse,” James said of fatigue and injuries. “We have to hold each other more accountable, we have to play better. And we will. But I don’t think we improved tonight.”

LeBron James climbs higher on career scoring list, but Cavs fall to Raptors 103-99

By Jason Lloyd Published: November 25, 2015

TORONTO: Kevin Love scored 21 points and grabbed 13 rebounds and LeBron James climbed higher on the career scoring list, but the Cavaliers fell to the Toronto Raptors 103-99 Wednesday night.

It was the Cavs’ fourth loss of the season – all on the road. Unlike the first three, however, this one was decided before the final minute.

Kyle Lowry scored 27 points for the Raptors, including 20 in the second half and offensively-challenged Bismack Biyombo had two big baskets in the fourth quarter.

Mo Williams returning, but Dellavedova questionable against Raptors

By Jason Lloyd Published: November 25, 2015

TORONTO: Mo Williams will be back in the lineup Wednesday when the Cavs play at the Toronto Raptors, but Matthew Dellavedova may not join him.

Williams is returning after missing two games with swelling in his ankle, while Dellavedova has been fighting through a calf injury that coach David Blatt said Monday likely would’ve kept him out of the lineup if the Cavs weren’t otherwise so beaten up.

“We’re going to hold off on making any decision until game time,” Blatt said of Dellavedova.
