Acta looks for Gomez turnaround today

By Sheldon Ocker Published: June 23, 2012

HOUSTON: Jeanmar Gomez is not yet a finished product, and lately he has struggled, losing four of his past five and compiling a 7.92 earned-run average.

Gomez will make his 14th start of the season today against the Astros.

""He's gotten himself behind in the count a lot,'' manager Manny Acta said today. ""I think he's trying to be too fine. Jeanmar needs to concentrate on pounding his two-seamer in the zone.''

Starting pitchers usually take three to five years to develop into mature performers and Gomez isn't there yet.

""Some guys take longer than others,'' Acta said. ""Jeanmar is still relatively young. He came up two, three years ago and has learned a lot. But once you're up here, it's about making constant adjustments. The hitters adjusted to him, and now he has to adjust back.

""It's time for him to attack guys instead of being on the defensive and getting behind in the count too much.''
