CLEVELAND: Now that the Tigers have acquired closer Jose Veras from the Astros, what will the Indians do to counter the move? Or is that the wrong question?
“”I think Chris has a real good grasp of who we are and where we’re going,’’ manager Terry Francona said of GM Chris Antonetti. “”I don’t think that (Tigers acquisition) will have anything to do with what we want to do and how we want to get there.’’
Veras, 32, is 0-4 with 19 saves and a 2.93 ERA with 44 strikeouts and 14 walks in 43 innings.
The Astros acquired 19-year-old Class A outfielder Danry Vasquez, who was batting .281 at West Michigan in the Midwest League (same as Lake County).
In 2009, Veras pitched in the Tribe bullpen, posting a 1-2 record and 4.38 ERA in 22 appearances.
Francona knows there’s a trading deadline, but since it’s not part of his game preparation, he’s not fully informed.
Asked if trade talk is a distraction to his players, Francona said, “”Carlos (Santana) asked me something, not about that. But I thought the (deadline) was the 25th, so it can’t be much a a distraction.’’
The actual day is Wednesday. Maybe Francona was thinking about Christmas.
