At least one more move coming for Indians

By Sheldon Ocker Published: June 5, 2012

DETROIT: Carlos Santana rejoined the Indians today, and Double-A shortstop Juan Diaz was optioned back to Akron. But there is at least one more move coming in the immediate future.

Johnny Damon is scheduled to return for Wednesday night's game against the Tigers, which means someone will have to go. It could be Matt LaPorta, who was summoned from Columbus when Damon was placed on the paternity list.

However, that might not be the only way to go. Jose Lopez was a late scratch from tonight's lineup with soreness in his lower back. Depending on the severity of the injury, he might be placed on the disabled list, enabling LaPorta to stay put.

Moreover, with Santana now activated, the Tribe has three catchers. Lou Marson, of course, is the backup who caught regularly during Santana's absence. But there is no current need to keep Luke Carlin, who can be optioned to Triple-A.

That would clear the way for a utility player to be promoted and take the role of reserve shortstop. At the moment, there is none, and Lonnie Chisenhall would have to play short in the event of an emergency. That's a good enough reason to call up Jason Donald.
