Reds manager Dusty Baker ansawered Derek Lowe's charges and made some of his own this morning, including that Lowe was drinking during the time he said Baker instigated a harmful incident four years ago.
Baker also admitted that he ordered Mat Latos to throw inside to Lowe Wednesday night in retaliation of a pitch thrown at Joey Votto three years ago.
“”Yesterday he took exception to a ball inside then he hit Brandon (Phillips) later,'' Baker said. ""I’m not denying anything. I didn’t tell him (Latos) to hit him; I told him to buzz him and make him uncomfortable. That’s what happened. Nobody hit him, but then he hits our guy.’’
Lowe assumed that Latos’ purpose pitch stemmed from a 2008 episode involving him and Baker, not hitting Votto.
“”He was talking about something he said and did four years ago,’’ Baker said. “”You have to ask him about that.....Since he’s such a big man, let him run his mouth about that.’’
Lowe had no comment about Baker’s remarks.
Wednesday night, Lowe said of Baker, “”Dusty made up some (expletive) story (four years ago), and some people almost got fired. Latos had nothing to do with this. Why would he throw a 96-mile-per-hour fastball inside to the pitcher?
“”I just have no respect for the guy (Baker). I’m sure he’d say the same about me. But that’s why I was pointing at him. He pointed back like he had nothing to do with it.’’
Baker said he wasn’t bothered by Lowe’s low opinion of him.
“”I don’t care,’’ the manager said. “”Lots of people don’t respect me. He doesn’t respect himself….. he was drinking at the ballpark at that time, so he doesn’t remember what he said or what he did.’’
