Barnes named E.L. Pitcher of the Week

By sstorm Published: May 24, 2010

With a huge assist from new Aeros media relations coordinator Jacob Rosen, here's an edited version of the release on Akron's Scott Barnes being named the Eastern League Pitcher of the week Monday:

Aeros Left-handed pitcher Scott Barnes was named Eastern League Pitcher of the Week Monday for the week ending May 23rd, the first Akron player this season to win a weekly league award.

As an aside, Barnes starts for Akron (18-25) tonight at Canal Park against the Western Division's first-place Altoona Curve (27-16) in the first match up of a four-game series that begins at 7:05 p.m.

Although Barnes made only one start last week, it was one of the finest in his brief Double-A career. The 22-year old delivered five no-hit innings Tuesday to earn his first win of the season in the Aeros 2-0 victory over the Curve. He struck out five batters and only walked four, inducing five groundball outs and six fly outs.

The Akron bullpen continued Barnes' no-hit performance until an eighth inning single by Gorkys Hernandez, but that was the only hit for the Curve int he game as the shutout was the third by the Aeros this season.

Overall this season, Barnes is 1-4 with a 6.11 ERA. He leads the Aeros and is tied for 12th in the E.L. with 36 strikeouts. Batters are hitting .245 against him in his eight starts.

Indians fans might recall that Barnes joined the organization from San Francisco July 27th last year in a trade that sent former Aeros catcher Ryan Garko to the Giants. Barnes initially was an 8th-round selection by the Giants out of St. John’s University in the 2008 Draft.
