Benches clear as Gomez retaliates for Choo being hit

By Sheldon Ocker Published: April 14, 2012

KANSAS CITY, Mo.: Less than one year ago, Jonathan Sanchez, pitching for the Giants, struck Shin-Soo Choo with a pitch and broke his left thumb.

Sanchez was traded to the Royals over the winter. In the third inning of tonight's contest, he hit Choo again, this time above the right knee and Choo walked toward the mound as benches cleared. When order was restored, the Indians rallied for five runs to take a 5-0 lead in the middle of the third.

The first Kansas City batter in the bottom of the third was Mike Moustakes, and Jeanmar Gomez promptly hit him in the back with a pitch, prompting umpire Gary Darling to eject Gomez for the first time in his career.

As benches cleared for a second time, Jack Hannahan charged into the pile and also was ejected, along with manager Manny Acta.
