Cabrera to start in MLB All-Star Game in Jeter's absence

By sstorm Published: July 8, 2011

Indians SS Asdrubal Cabrera learned late Friday that he will start the July 12th All-Star Game in Arizona following with the news earlier in the day that New York Yankees SS Derek Jeter pulled himself from the game due to a nagging  injury.

Jeter, who is still two hits shy of his 3,000th hit after rain cancelled Friday's game against Tampa Bay, announced beforehand that instead of playing, he plans instead to rest his injured calf.

''Unfortunately, I won't be able to go," he told reporters. "It’s unfortunate because I know you guys know how much I enjoy going to All-Star Games," Jeter said. "I love playing in All-Star Games, especially getting voted in by the fans, it’s something I would like to do. I try to be smart about it. I know I can be stubborn a lot of times when it comes to injuries, but I’m trying to be smart."

Cabrera gets the nod in Jeter's place because he was "the highest-ranking available player on the Player Ballot" according to an MLB press release.
