GOODYEAR, Ariz.: The Indians released Matt Capps early this afternoon, but like Daisuke Matsuzaka, he might return after working out a new deal.
Both Matsuzaka and Capps are major-league free agents who came to camp on minor-league contracts. Conesequently, they had the right to walk away on Tuesday if they were not part of the 40-man roster.
Alternatively, the Tribe could offer them each a $100,000 retention bonus that would bind them to the club until June 1. It also would allow the team to send them to Triple-A.
It is clear that neither pitcher was able to find another club willing to put him on the roster, which gives the Indians a chance to work out a different kind of deal in the next few days.
