DETROIT: The Indians needed a roster spot today to make room for Jason Kubel, so they optioned Carlos Carrasco to Columbus, but it's unlikely that he will stay there for long.
He is eligible to return to the big leagues on Tuesday, and undoubtedly he will be brought back that day.
After stumbling in several spot starts this year, Carrasco, a career starter, came out of the bullpen to throw five innings of one-hit relief against the Angels on Aug. 9.
Altogether he has thrown 10 1/3 innings of scoreless relief, including 1 1/3 innings Friday night against the Tigers.
In other news, first baseman David Cooper, 26, s free agent signed Aug. 13, has opted out of his contract.
Cooper played inb 72 games for the Blue Jays in 2011 and 2012, batting .279 with six homers and 23 RBI.
Because he had no played since last year, Cooper was sent to the Arizona Rookie League for six games before moving up to Columbus, where he batted .192 in seven games.
