Carrasco out of a job?

By Sheldon Ocker Published: July 7, 2013

CLEVELAND: Is Carlos Carrasco back in Columbus for the short term or long term?.

After giving up six earned runs in 31/3 innings Saturday in the Tribe’s 9-4 loss to the Tigers, Carrasco was optioned to Triple-A and reliever Preston Guilmet was sumoned to Cleveland..

Carrasco has given up at least six earned runs four times and failed to reach the fifth inning four times. His 0-4 record and 9.10 ERA speak volumes.

Unless he replaces an injured player, Carrasco must remain in Columbus for 10 days. But his turn will come again on Thursday. The probable alternative is Trevor Bauer, who can be called up to make his fifth start of the season.

However, manager Terry Francona wasn't rready to commit to Bauer.

“”We had intended for Carrasco to make his next start,’’ Francona said today. ‘’but because he went short, we wanted another reliever.’’

But Carrasco’s demotion wasn’t based solely on needing another arm in the bullpen.

“”We need him to pitch better,’’ Francona said.

Of Guilmet, Francona said, “”He worked his way up through every level and has had success.

“”He was a minor-league invitee to camp and was supposed to go down in the first cuts, same as (Matt) Langwell. But both of them made it to the big leagues.’’

Guilmet, 25, has posted a 2-4 record with 16 saves and a 2.32 ERA in 34 relief appearances with the Clippers.
