Catching decisions coming soon

By Sheldon Published: June 2, 2010

DETROIT: What if?

Mike Redmond has caught every one of Fausto Carmona's starts, including tonight's against the Tigers. But when Carlos Santana is called up from Columbus, how will the Indians' catching corps sort itself out?

Manager Manny Acta and General Manager Mark Shapiro might already have planned for that eventuality, but nothing has been hinted. Acta was asked this afternoon if regular catcher Lou Marson would get an opportunity to catch Carmona at some point in the season.

""As long as Mike is here and continues to help in Fausto's success, he's going to catch him,'' Acta said.

Acta's use of the phrase ""as long as Mike is here'' might not have been a hint that Redmond's days with the Tribe are numbered. On the other hand, it's possible that Santana will be No. 1 and Marson the backup when it's time to call up the teams' No. 1 prospect.

However, because of his status as a respected veteran who can mentor both Marson and Santana, both of whom are novices, Redmond might remain with the club the entire season. Moreover, it's likely that Tribe officials prefer to have Marson play every day, which means he will be optioned to Triple-A when Santana is summoned to Cleveland. That might happen in a couple of weeks.

Why did the Indians send right-hander Shane Lindsay to extended spring training in Goodyear, Ariz? Lindsay was claimed on waivers from the Yankees Tuesday and (technically) optioned to Kinston. He also was added to the Tribe's 40-man roster. To make room for him, Grady Sizemore was transferred from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day DL.

Apparently, Lindsay isn't ready to pitch yet. He was claimed by the Yankees from the Rockies on May 14 and did not pitch in a game.

Lindsay, 25, is a native of Melbourne, Autralia, and was originally signed by the Rockies in 2003.
