Choo homer fails to prevent fifth loss

GOODYEAR, Ariz.: Shin-Soo Choo hit his second home run of the spring, and manager Manny Acta found aspects of the game to praise, but the Indians lost 5-2 to the Padres this afternoon, fixing their exhibition season record at 2-5-1.

""I'm very happy about the way (Justin) Masterson threw,'' Acta said. ""He got through three innings with less than 50 pitches, and he mixed his pitches well. Scott Barnes alwo threw very well, and (Shin-Soo) Choo had quality at-bats all day.''

Masterson was hardly perfect in his execution, giving up one run on four hits, but he didn't issue a walk and struck out four.  Barnes pitched two scoreless innings, allowing two hits and striking out one.

""Barnes has some deception, and we like his live arm,'' Acta said. ""He doesn't back down, and he attacks the strike zone.''

In addition to hitting  the home run, Choo also doubled.
