The Indians landed a 19-year-old pitcher by trading Jhonny Peralta and cash to the Detroit Tigers.
Giovanni Soto, 19, is 6-6 with a 2.61 ERA in 16 starts at low Class-A West Michigan. In 82 2/3 innings, he has struck out 76 batters, issued 25 walks and hasn't given up more than three earned runs in each outing.
Soto was selected by the Tigers in the 21st round of the 2009 June draft. Last year in the Gulf Coast League, Soto led the league with a 1.18 earned-run average and compiled a 4-0 record in 13 appearances, including six starts.
Ironically, Soto's best start of the season came June 16 against the Indians Class-A affililiate in Lake County. Against the Captains Soto tossed a nine-inning, complete-game shutout, allowing just three hits while striking out seven.
A Midwest League mid-season all-star, the 6-foot-4 Soto is tied for first in the M.L. with two complete games and ranks second in ERA. He was the Tigers 21st round pick in 2009.
