GLENDALE, Ariz.: Josh Beckett set the tone by throwing three scoreless innings, as Dodger pitching shut down the Tribe, leading the way to a 5-1 win at Camelback Ranch.
The Indians totaled only five hits, but Yan Gomes, one of the stars of the early exhibition season, doubled and walked in three plate appearances to lift his average to .417.
Most Tribe pitchers matched the Los Angeles staff pitch for pitch. Corey Kluber started and gave up four hits but no runs in three innings.
""He was attacking the zone and had a swing-and-miss fastball,'' manager Terry Francona said.
Cody Allen had the most impressive inning, retiring the side in order with one strikeout. In three spring innings, Allen has allowed one hit and struck out four.
Fernando Nieve gave up four runs, four hits and one walk.
