Four starters enough for awhile; Cabrera gets eight games

By Sheldon Ocker Published: April 12, 2013

CLEVELAND:  For the next week, manager Terry Francona will need only four starters, thanks to Monday’s off day.
“”We don’t need another starter until the 20th,’’ the manager said. “”Potentially, (Scott) Kazmir will start that day and if not, we’ll bring someone up.’’
Kazmir is on the disabled list with a strained rib cage, but he is expected to be ready to return to the active roster in a few days.
The current rotation: Zach McAllister, Brett Myers, Justin Masterson and Ubaldo Jimenez.
Corey Kluber, who was called up to start Wednesday night, never did get to pitch because the game was rained out. Friday, he was optioned back to Columbus.

Not unexpectedly, Carlos Carrasco received an eight-game suspension for hitting Kevin Youkilis in the shoulder Tuesday night, following a home run by Robinson Cano.

Asked if he was satisfied with the punishment, General Manager Chris Antonetti said, “”No. Carlos was very adamant in saying that it was not intentional. The only person who knows if it was intentional or not is Carlos, and he was very convincing.’’
The incident was similar to Carrasco’s first run-in with Major League Baseball law. In late July of 2011, Carrasco gave up a grand slam to the Royals’ Melky Cabrera then threw at the head of Billy Butler but missed.
Carrasco was optioned to Triple-A on Wednesday, but he cannot serve the suspension until he returns to the big leagues. There is no timetable for when that will happen.
