Gomes teaming with Kazmir; Myers in limbo

By Sheldon Ocker Published: July 19, 2013

Scott Kazmir and Yan Gomes are becoming a team within a team.

Francona has noted that in six starts with Carlos Santana behind the plate, Kazmir is 1-3 with a 7.39 ERA. In 10 starts with Gomes as his catcher, Kazmir is 4-1 with a 3.26 ERA.

Part of this discrepancy might be attributed to the fact that most of Santana’s games were early in the season, when Kazmir was searching for consistency after two years of seldom facing big-league hitters.

But Gomez and Kazmir also seem to be an effective tandem.

“”Gomes and Kazmir really have meshed well,’’ Francona said. “”I would like to keep them together if possible.’’

They are together again tonight.

Brett Myers (elbow inflammation) still doesn’t know when he will be permitted to throw again.

“”He’s down for right now,’’ Francona said. “”We want to give him another shot, but it’s getting to be the time of year when that gets tougher. Right now, he’s not throwing, and there is no date for him to start.’’

Asked if surgery was in Myers’ future, Francona said, “”At his age, he doesn’t want to do that.’’

If Myers does come back this season, he will be used in the bullpen rather than in the rotation.
