Hagadone optioned; Tribe plays short-handed

By Sheldon Ocker Published: July 7, 2012
CLEVELAND:  Lefty reliever Nick Hagadone was shipped back to Columbus today, but the Indians elected to leave their bullpen short-handed for a day.
That's because they wanted to call up Scott Barnes, another lefty, but he is not eligible to be recalled until Sunday. Players optioned the minors must stay there for 10 days and Barnes could not return to Cleveland today.
""Our guys are well rested,'' manager Manny Acta said. ""If we get in a situation (a long extra innings game), one of our starters can fill in.''
With a fastball that ranges into the mid and upper 90s, Hagadone still has the potential to be a back-end reliever, but he needs to work on his command.
In his last 18 appearances, Hagadone gave up 23 hits, 17 runs and 13 walks in 15 innings for a 10.20 ERA. But in six outings before that, Hagadone pitched six times and gave up no runs and one hit in seven innings.
