A reliever had to be lopped off the roster to make room for Joe Smith, who comes off the disabled list Friday after his recovery from a strained abdominal muscle.
The unlucky guy is Frank Herrmann. The reason: He has options remaining. Other candidates either didn't have options (Justin Germano) or are veterans deemed too valuable despite recent performances (Chad Durbin).
Herrmann's record is not without blemishes either. In four appearances, he has five up four runs in 4 1/3 innings. The difference is that he is young and still learning. His lessons will come at Columbus for the time being.
