* Designated hitter/first baseman Jason Giambi (calf) is eligible to come off the disabled list Monday. Manager Terry Francona said, "We’ve got to figure out our roster. We always want to be respectful of G because he deserves that and make it work on our roster, which is sometimes harder than it has been in the past. That’s not his fault."

* In the eighth inning of a 5-4 loss Tuesday, Francona said he briefly considered pinch-running for Santana, “but not much.”

Santana was thrown out at the plate with what would have been the tying run. A great throw by left fielder Melky Cabrera enabled catcher Josh Thole to tag a sliding Cabrera.

“We had (Yan) Gomes hitting, so you’ve got to understand they don’t have to pitch to Gomes, we have Lonnie (Chisenhall) on deck,” Francona said. We wanted to have an answer for that. We were maybe going to send (Ryan) Raburn up there, they bring in the righty, we’ve got Nyjer (Morgan). We’re going 2 for 1. You want to keep somebody back. Carlos is a pretty good baserunner.”

* Catcher George Kottaras accepted his assignment to Triple-A Columbus. According to, he was added to the active roster after catcher Roberto Perez was placed on the seven-day disabled list with a left hamstring strain.
