Indians' Jason Kipnis ejected in third inning vs. Tigers

By Marla Ridenour Published: April 17, 2014

Indians second baseman Jason Kipnis was ejected at the end of the third inning of the Tribe’s game against the Detroit Tigers in Comerica Park Thursday afternoon after striking out with the bases loaded.

It was the first career ejection for Kipnis, who was replaced by Mike Aviles.

Kipnis saw three pitches in that at-bat from Tigers right-hander Justin Verlander. The first, a fastball, was a called strike. Kipnis fouled off a curveball, then swung at another curve. Whatever Kipnis said to home plate umpire Lance Barrett, Barrett wasted no time tossing him.

Kipnis went 0 for 3 with a walk in Tuesday night’s 3-2 victory over the Tigers.

He grounded into a double play his first time up against Verlander. Coming into the game, Kipnis was batting .125 in his career against Verlander with 11 strikeouts in 24 at-bats.
