Indians make 40-man roster moves; add 5 youngsters & DFA Phelps

Like every major league baseball team across the map, the Indians made their 40-man roster moves official Wednesday afternoon.


The Tribe added first baseman Jesus Aguilar, right-handed pictehrs Austin Adams and  Bryan Price, shortstop Erik Gonzalez and outfielder Carlos Moncrief to their 40-man roster. Four of the five, save for Gonzalez, who played at the high Class-A level with the Carolina Mudcats last season, suited up for the Aeros at the Double-A level last year.


In order to make room on the roster that stood at 36 entering the day, the Indians designated second baseman Cord Phelps for assignment to vacate the extra spot needed. Phelps was the team’s third-round selection in the 2008 draft. 


The timing of the 40-man roster comes now so that each organization has the opportunity to protect the younger players added from exposed to the upcoming Rule V Draft.


However, the Indians will most likely make another 40-man roster move soon when former Texas outfielder David Murphy passes his physical and is added to the Tribe’s roster.
