Indians Michael Bourn and Jason Giambi close to making minor league rehab outings

Indians outfielder Michael Bourn (hamstring) and designated hitter Jason Giambi (fractured ribs) are each progressing in their respective rehabs.

Bourn was scheduled to start with Triple-A Columbus Friday night, but precaution ruled with damp and wet conditions keeping the veteran from participating. Bourn, who started the season on the disabled list after injuring his left hamstring in spring training, was slated to play in one of Saturday’s games of a Clippers’ doubleheader.

Giambi, who also started the season on the DL after being hit by a pitch in a spring game, said Friday he was feeling good enough to start testing himself. But recent wet conditions in Oakland and Cleveland kept him from getting out on the field to do so.

After talking with Giambi Friday, Tribe manager Terry Francona said the pair decided the veteran slugger would likely need a couple minor league rehab appearances before rejoining the Indians’ active roster when he’s eligible to come off the disabled list April 14.

“Before he comes back, we’ll get him out to DH probably a couple games just to make sure he sees some pitches and gets his legs going,” Francona said. “That’ll be close by – whoever’s home – Columbus, Akron… Talking to G, he doesn’t need a lot of games, but I think a couple would be beneficial.”
