Indians' rainout forces doubleheader Wednesday; KSU's Chafin to start for Diamondbacks

By Marla Ridenour Published: August 12, 2014

The Indians game against the Arizona Diamondbacks Tuesday night at Progressive Field was postponed after a rain delay of three hours and 40 minutes.

It will be made up Wednesday with a traditional doubleheader starting at 4:05 p.m. Gates will open at 3 p.m.

Right-hander Trevor Bauer will start the first game for the Indians against Diamondbacks left-hander Andrew Chafin. In the second game, right-hander Josh Tomlin will go for the Tribe against left-hander Vidal Nuno.

Chafin, a first-round draft pick out of Kent State in 2011, will be making his major league debut after having his contract selected from Triple-A Reno Friday. Chafin was told when he arrived in Phoenix that his role would be long relief.

Tuesday's game was stopped at 7:57 p.m. in the top of the fourth inning. The Diamondbacks had one on and one out against Tribe left-hander T.J. House.

Statistics from Tuesday’s play will not be counted.

The game was set to resume about 11:30 p.m., with the tarp off and the field prepared when another deluge came. C.C. Lee and Kyle Crockett were warming in the Indians' bullpen, Chafin was set to come in for the Diamondbacks.

After the tarp was hurriedly put back on, Tribe players Jason Kipnis, Lonnie Chisenhall and Mike Aviles began belly-sliding on it, with Kipnis crossing home plate and Aviles going over the pitchers’ mound.

"When you get to the point where it's like 11 or 11:30 and you're just over the whole thing, you get real restless," said Aviles, who said the fun "may or may not" have been his idea.

The postponement spoiled a special birthday for Chafin's girlfriend, a Kent State student. According to a tweet by Nick Piecoro of AZ Central Sports, two weeks ago she said he wanted her birthday present to be Chafin making his major league debut in Cleveland. Presumably she won't mind her gift being a day late.
