According to multiple sources, the Indians and free-agent outfielder Nick Swisher agreed on a four-year, $56 million contract late Saturday night.
Consumation of the deal will not become official until Swisher passes a physicsl, which probably won't take place for a few days.
The acquisition of Swisher fills a huge hole in right field created by the trade of Shin-Soo Choo to the Cincinnati Reds.
In addition to the guaranteed portion of the contract, the deal includes a $14 million option for a fifth season, based on plate appearances, bringing the potential value to $70 million.
Swisher is a switch hitter who batted .272 with 24 home runs and 93 RBI for the New York Yankees last season. His problem has been the postseason. In 46 games, he has batted only .169 with four homers and eight RBI.
