Indians still mum on Damon; game rescheduled

By Sheldon Ocker Published: April 13, 2012

KANSAS CITY, Mo.: One national baseball writer tweeted the Johnny Damon took his physical two days ago, so why aren't the Indians anouncing the signing?

During an interview before this afternoon's game with the Royals, Manager Manny Acta refused to acknowledge that Damon is on his way.

Asked how long it might take Damon to get ready for the season, Acta said, "I don't know. It depends on the guy.''

What if the player is 38 years old? "It depends on the genes of the guy,'' the manager said.

Damon said he can be ready in no more than a week. More than likely, inasmuch as he did not have a spring training, it wil take him three weeks.

When Damon does arrive, he is likely to at least platoon in left with Shelley Duncan, with Damon getting most of the at-bats because he would play against right-handed pitchers. That would put Duncan on the bench about 70 percent of the time.

"I'm not worried about that yet,'' Duncan said, then went on to praise Damon.

"I don't know what numbers he's going to have, but I guarantee you that he'll bring a great attitude and leadership and all those kinds of good characteristics,'' Duncan said. ""He's one of my favorite teammates.''

Tuesday night's rainout against the White Sox will be made up as part of a day-night, separate-admission doubleheader May 7. The makeup game will begin at 1:05 p.m. the regularly scheduled contest will start at 7:05 at night.

Fans who hold tickets to Tuesday's rainout can use them for the makeup game or exchange them for any other game. The exhange must be made before May 7.
