Indians vs. Cubs: Pregame notes and lineups

By Marla Ridenour Published: March 6, 2014

The Beacon Journal passes the baton today as I, Marla Ridenour, take over for Stephanie Storm. I'll be following the Tribe through the home opener April 4. I'll be in Arizona for all the spring training action through March 27, follow the Indians to San Diego for two exhibition games and then on to Oakland for the three-game season-opening series that starts on March 31.

I hope to use these next three weeks to take a look at some of the personalities on the Indians, both in the clubhouse and on the major and minor league coaching staff.

Today's lineup as the Indians (6-1) host the Chicago Cubs (2-4) at 3:05 p.m. at Goodyear Ballpark.

Indians: Bourn CF, Swisher 1B, Kipnis 2B, Santana 3B, Brantley LF, Cabrera SS, Gomes DH, Murphy RF, Perez C

Starting P: Masterson

Cubs: Emilio Bonifacio LF, Donnie Murphy 3B, Nate Schierholtz RF, Anthony Rizzo DH, Welington Castillo C, Mike Olt 1B, Darwin Barney SS, Albert Almora CF, Arismendy Alcantara 2B.

Starting P: Travis Wood.

Numbers nuggets

Through their first seven games, the Indians hit .253 with six homers, 12 doubles, five triples, 38 RBI and a .425 slugging percentage with 43 strikeouts. Their 36 walks were second in the Cactus League.... The pitchers had a 3.71 ERA and foes were batting .197 (a Cactus League best).
