PRE GAME NOTES:

* Both starting pitchers Tuesday are making their first major league starts of the season. After seven relief appearances, Twins right-hander Samuel Deduno (0-1, 2.89 ERA) is in the rotation in the spot of the injured right-hander Mike Pelfrey (groin). Pelfrey made just five starts into his two-year, $11 million contract with the Twins before going on the disabled list… Indians right-hander Josh Tomlin was called up from Triple-A Columbus and is starting in the spot vacated by struggling right-hander Carlos Carrasco, who was moved to the bullpen.

* Tuesday’s sunny weather before batting practice finally afforded Indians centerfielder Michael Bourn the opportunity to run a little bit and test his balky left hamstring. However, the game marked the third the speedster has missed since he left Saturday’s game for precautionary reasons.

* Prior to Tuesday’s game, reserve catcher George Kottaras became the odd man out and was designated for assignment in order to clear a spot on the roster for Tomlin. The well-traveled veteran had recently been called up to the Indians from Triple-A Columbus as catching insurance when starter Yan Gomes went on the paternity list. The one game he played in was a memorable one, as Kottaras hit pair of solo home runs in his first two at-bats, becoming the first player in franchise history to accomplish the feat.
