It's official: Hannahan will open at third; LaPorta to minors

By Sheldon Ocker Published: March 27, 2012

GLENDALE, Ariz.: The Indians sent Lonnie Chisenhall, Matt LaPorta and Chad Huffman back to the  minor-league camp today, ensuring that Jack Hannahan will open the season at third.

"We still saw a lot of positives with Lonnie this spring,'' General Manager Chris Antonetti said. "He made great strides defensively. Offensively, he needs to get more consistent. Fundamentally, he has a very good swing, but he needs to manage the strike zone better.''

LaPorta came to camp having already lost the first base job to Casey Kotchman, who was acquired over the winter.

"Matt continues to demonstrate in spurts that he can be a quality bat in the middle of the order,'' Antonetti said. "Hopefully, he'll go down and play reguarly to get that consistency.''
