TORONTO: Most teams remove injured players from the roster and put them on the disabled list. The Indians played it a little differently today.
Scott Kazmir, the Tribe's No. 5 starter, scheduled to pitch Saturday agsainst the Rays, was placed on the roster five days early because he felt twinge in the rib cage area playing catch on Monday.
"He still might make his start, but this allows us to back date him to today, if he has to go on the DL,'' said assistant general manager Mike Chernoff. ""If he does go on the DL, he would really miss less than 10 days.''
Players cannot be placed on the DL unless they are on the roster. To make room on the roster for Kazmir, lefty Nick Hagadone was optioned to Colimbus.
Losing Hagadone ruins the plan of Tribe operatives to carry eight relievers for the first two or three weeks of the season because of the heavy schedule of games.
