Kazmir to miss two or three starts; Bauer to replace him

By Sheldon Ocker Published: April 4, 2013

TORONTO: After Scott Kazmir underwent an MRI scan at the Cleveland Clinic today, it was revealed that he is suffering from a strained right rib cage.

Kazmir was placed on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 2, which means he will be eligible to be activated April 17. In the meantime, he will miss two or three starts.

Trevor Bauer will be called up from Columbus to take Kazmir's start. Despite his inexperience, he was the most logical choice.

Daisuke Matsuzaka needs more time in the minors to improve his velocity, and he is not on the 40-man roster. Corey Kluber was a possibility, but he has not shown much promise in previous major-league trials.

On Monday, Kazmir was playing catch, when he felt a twinge in his upper right abdomen and stopped throwing.

It was decided to put him on the roster on Tuesday rather than the day of his first scheduled start, which was slated for Saturday against the Rays.Once a player is on the roster, he is eligible to go on the DL, which Tribe officials feared he might have to do.
