Making her pitch for girls in baseball

By Sheldon Published: February 21, 2011

GOODYEAR, Ariz.: Former Clevelander Justine Siegal pitched batting practice to several Indians minor leaguers and catchers this morning in an effort to promote her cause: eliminating the bias against girls who want to play baseball.

""What I want is girls baseball across the country,'' she said. ""When I do this (throw batting practice), people will start talking about it.''

Siegel was an assistant baseball coach at Springfield (Mass.) College for three years and pitched and played third base on the boys team at Hawken School in Gates Mills. She is a lifelong fan of the Tribe and said, ""I wanted to be Orel Hershiser.''

The 36-year-old mother said she is the first woman to throw BP sat a big-league training camp. She will do the same against A's hitters on Wednesday.

She said she didn't know how hard she was throwing: ""I don't throw as hard as I used to, but when I was 19 or 20 I could get it up there in the upper 70's.'' ¶

Why was Mitch Talbot walking around the clubhouse with two three-foot lengths of two-inch tape stuck side by side, running down on his back?

"It helps me keep my shoulders back,'' he said. ""It's not just for when I'm pitching but all the time.''

Talbot isn't sure who came up with the idea, but thought it might be the training staff.

Fans attending the March 10 game against the Giants will have a chance to obtain the autograph of former Tribe Hall of Fame pitcher Gaylord Perry, who will be at Goodyear Ballpark.

Josh Tomlin will throw the first inning in the first of two intrasquad games.

In addition to Tomlin, Justin Masterson, Kelvin De La Cruz, Jeanmar Gomez, Nick Hagadone, David Huff, Joe Smith, Doug Mathis and Drew Pomeranz will throw Thursday.

In Friday's practice game, Carlos Carrasco, Mitch Talbot, Josh Judy, Frank Herrmann, Aaron Laffey, Jensen Lewis, Yohan Pino, Anthony Reyes, Tony Sipp, Jess Todd, Zach McAllister, Joe Martinez, Bryce Stowell and Vinnie Pestano will each pitch an inning. ¶
