ST. PETERSBURG, Fla.: Lou Marson had to leave tonight's game after the fourth inning because of a cervical neck strain following a collision at the plate in the third.
With Tampa Bay center fielder Desmond Jennings on third and nobody out, Matt Joyce hit a routine bouncer to Lonnie Chisenhall at third. Jennings was running on the play, and Chisenhall threw him out at the plate.
Jennings' only chance to score was to barrel into Marson hard with his shoulder, but Marson held onto the ball. After a lengthy conversation with head trainer Lonnie Soloff, Marson was permitted to continue in the game.
However, just before the Rays batted the fourth, manager Terry Francona pulled Marson from the game. Regular atcher Carlos Santana, installed at DH for tonight's game, moved behind the plate.
That left the Tribe without a DH, and starter Trevor Bauer was forced to hit in Marson's spot (9th) in the lineup. He came to the plate in the fifth and struck out looking.
