Former Aeros OF/IB Matt McBride was named the Eastern League Player of the Month for July on Friday.
McBride, who was promoted to Triple-A Columbus July 29th, led the E.L. in a majority of the circuit's offensive categories through 23 July games. He batted .364 (32-for-88) while leading Akron to an 18-9 record, including racking up a league-leading 11 home runs and 29 RBI to go along with a a .852 slugging percentage, 1.271 OPS and 75 total bases.
McBride, a converted catcher, also ranked second in the league with 21 extra-base hits while placing fourth in batting average and sixth with 10 doubles.
On the season, McBride hit .285 in 94 games with the Aeros before being promoted to the Clippers. He still leads Akron by a wide margin with 25 doubles, 17 home runs, 64 RBI and 180 total bases. He reached base safely in all 44 of his Eastern League road games, the longest such streak in professional baseball this season.
McBride's hot streak hasn't slowed, either, as he's batting .400 (12-for-30) in his first seven games in the International League.
Cleveland’s supplemental second-round selection out of Lehigh University in 2006, McBride led the Indians organization with 99 RBI combined last season.
* In other Aeros news, RHP Chen-Chang Lee was placed on the disabled list Thursday (retroactive to Aug. 3rd) with an oblique strain.
The Taiwan native has been one of the most consistent relievers for the team this season, going 5-3 with a 3.83 ERA in a team-leading 35 appearances. He ranks fourth among E.L. relievers with 9.91 strikeouts per nine innings.
The 23-year-old has also been on a hot streak for the past six weeks, not allowing an earned run in 11 consecutive games since a relief appearance on June 25th against Binghamton. Over that stretch, Lee has amassed 22 strikeouts, five walks and six hits over 16 1/3 innings while allowing only a pair of unearned runs.
Lee has spent the entirety of 2010 in Double-A after posting a 4-6 mark and 3.35 ERA in 45 games with high Class-A Kinston last season. Lee joined the Indians organization as a non-drafted free agent in September 2008.
