CINCINNATI:  Chris Perez will undergo a medical exam at 2 p.m. today to determine the cause of the pain in his right shoulder.

He will be on the disabled list at least 15 days, and during his absence Vinnie Pestano will be manager Terry Francona's first option as the Tribe's closer.

""I talked to Vinnie this morning,'' Francona said. ""He's comfortable sliding into that inning. We have plenty of depth.''

Francona isn't committing to a setup man for now, but Joe Smith, Cody Allen and Bryan Shaw all could see time in that spot or as a seventh-inning specialist.

Pestano has had problems with his velocity, but he says he no longer feels pain in his right elbow.

""I just have to regain my arm strength,'' he said. ""We saw some stuff mechanically that might have affectead my velocity.''

In other injury news, Brett Myers noted a dip in his velocity in his last rehab start will undergo an examination of his right elbow on Tuesday.
