CLEVELAND: Vinnie Pestano has established a franchise record by striking out at least one batter in his past 22 appearances, dating to last September.
The former record belonged to Paul Shuey
Pestano has done much more, though. Since the start of the 2011 season, he has pitched in 87 games, giving up two or more runs only three times and allowing no runs 71 times. He also has struck out an average of 12.2 batters per nine innings and posted a 2.37 earned-run average.
“”He’s been pretty impressive,’’ manager Manny Acta today. “”When he first came up in 2010 you could see flashes, and last year he took off from the get-go.
“”At first he fired up nothing but fastballs, then clubs started making adjustments. Now they have to deal with his slider, too.’’
Jack Hannahan missed his ninth consecutive start tonight with soreness in his back, but he is getting close to returning to the lineup.
“”Today probably was his best day,’’ Acta said. “”He swung the bat pretty well and he was running around. He’s available off the bench.’’
Nevertheless, Acta said that Hannahan probably would not return to the lineup for a couple of days.
