PORTLAND SEA DOGS 1, AKRON AEROS 0
KEY STATS - Portland starter Felix Doubront combined with three relievers to limit the host Aeros to five hits in the shutout, with the SeaDogs bullpen allowing just one hit over the final four innings...Indians rehabbing pitcher Jake Westbrook pitched four shutout innings, allowing three singles and issuing three strikeouts.
"I can tell that I'm putting a little more stress on my arm because I'm throwing more and more," Westbrook said. "Now, it's just a matter of how I handle each outing and how I feel tomorrow morning, as well as four days from now. So far it's been pretty good. I'm sore each day, but it's a good sore - the same you feel after you pitch when you're healthy."
KEY MOMENTS - The lone run of the game came in the Portland sixth inning when Aeros reliever Zack Putnam walked Reid Engel to start the frame, then gave up a one-out RBI-double to Mark Wagner.
STORM'S STARS - The Aeros defense threw out a runner at the plate to keep a run from scoring against Westbrook. Portland DH Jon Still hit a single to center field that Jose Constanza gathered and threw perfectly on a one-hopper into Aeros catcher Carlos Santana. Santana first blocked the plate with his left foot to trip up runner Argenis Diaz, then tagged him for the out when Diaz missed the plate...Portland's defense returned the favor in the eighth inning, throwing out the potential tying run at the plate in Cristo Arnal on a Santana single to left field.
Making the play even more impressive was the fact that it was left fielder Iggy Suarez who threw Arnal out from shallow left. Despite having played in 678 professional games, Friday's game marked the usual shortstop's first ever start in the outfield.
NOTES: Indians left-handed pitcher Scott Lewis made his way to Akron Friday after a sucessful rehab outing Thursday at Class-A Lake County (three shutout innings). Lewis, who opened the season as the Tribe's No. 4 starter in the rotation, strained his left forearm after just one start in Cleveland. He is scheduled to start for the Aeros Tuesday in New Hampshire.
UP NEXT - Akron and visiting Portland (Boston Red Sox) meet for the second game of this three-game series tonight at Canal Park at 7:05 p.m. Aeros left-hander Ryan Edell (1-0, 2.56 ERA) and Portland right-hander Junichi Tazawa are the scheduled starters.
