Pregame blog: Indians at White Sox lineups; Carrasco to skip next start

By Marla Ridenour Published: April 12, 2014

Indians manager Terry Francona said Carlos Carrasco, holding the fifth spot in the rotation, will skip his next start as the Tribe takes advantage of Monday's off day.

Francona said Carrasco will be available in the bullpen during a three-game series that opens Tuesday in Detroit. His next scheduled start will be Saturday April 19 at home against Toronto.

Carrasco lasted just 4.2 innings Friday night in a 9-6 loss to the White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field. The 27-year-old righthander is 0-2 with a 7.84 ERA in two games.

Last season against the White Sox, Justin Masterson went 4-0 with an 0.83 ERA. In 32.2 innings, he threw two complete games and struck out 29.

A byproduct of starters Danny Salazar and Carlos Carrasco lasting just 3.2 and 4.2 innings against the White Sox in the first two games: The Tribe bullpen has allowed six runs in 7 2/3 innings (7.04 ERA).

A seventh-inning single by Jason Kipnis, a Northbrook, Ill., native meant the second baseman has hit safely in his last nine games at U.S. Cellular Field and in 20 of 21 for his career.

Indians pitchers walked nine on Friday night, the most since the Tribe allowed nine on April 16, 2013, against the Boston Red Sox.
