Pregame blog: Indians vs. Cubs (SS), Giants (SS): Lineup and notes

By Marla Ridenour Published: March 16, 2014

Matt Carson was scratched from right field in today's game vs. the Cubs in Mesa with a bruised right hand. Carson was hit in the hand Friday against the Chicago White Sox in Glendale.

"He went out and did some stuff today," Indians manager Terry Francona said. "In his own words he said he’s about 80 percent. It doesn’t seem to make much sense to have him play. I told him, ‘We know what you can do.’ He’s also competing.

"Some of how when it comes down to the end are going to be fits. I don’t think Matt needs to play today. Saying that I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s OK tomorrow."

Danny Salazar's next outing will not come in a starting role. Salazar is scheduled to follow Carlos Carrasco in Wednesday's game against the Oakland A's in Goodyear. Carrasco is slated for five innings, Salazar four.

"One has to start and one has to relieve. You could come up with a reason for either," Francona said. "I told (pitching coach) Mickey Callaway I’d defer to whatever he felt was the best. Contemplating putting one in a minor league game and one in a big-league game, but we decided we wanted to see them in a major league game."
